Summary of Responsibilities
To ensure the highest fire protection and safety standards in a nuclear facility through expert engineering, analysis, and program management.
Education and Experience
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Engineering, or related technical field and 2 NFPA or equivalent certifications.
- 8+ years of combined experience in fire protection
- At least 5 years of fire protection service/experience of on-site experience in a nuclear or highly regulated industry
- At least 3 years of experience in fire protection engineering or related role
- Thorough knowledge of NFPA codes and standards
- Experience with fire system impairments, hot work permits, and compensatory measures
- Familiarity with fire protection systems
- Water-based systems:
- Wet pipe sprinkler systems
- Dry pipe sprinkler systems
- Pre-action sprinkler systems
- Deluge systems
- Fire pumps and water storage tanks
- Gaseous fire suppression systems:
- Carbon dioxide (CO2) systems
- Clean agent systems (e.g., FM-200, Novec 1230)
- Water-based systems:
- Inert gas systems (e.g., Inergen, Argonite)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Fire Protection Engineering or related field
- 10+ years of experience in fire protection engineering in the nuclear industry
- Familiarity with 10 CFR 70.72 requirements and implementation in nuclear facility operations
- Familiarity with various fire protection systems, including but not limited to:
- Water-based systems:
- Wet pipe sprinkler systems
- Dry pipe sprinkler systems
- Pre-action sprinkler systems
- Deluge systems
- Fire pumps and water storage tanks
- Gaseous fire suppression systems:
- Carbon dioxide (CO2) systems
- Clean agent systems (e.g., FM-200, Novec 1230)
- Inert gas systems (e.g., Inergen, Argonite)
- Oxygen reduction (hypoxic) systems
- Passive fire protection systems:
- Fire-rated walls, floors, and ceilings
- Water-based systems:
- NQA-1 Auditor and ISO Auditor certifications.
- Proficiency in fire code enforcement inspections
- Familiarity with different types of fire seals, including but not limited to:
- Intumescent seals
- Elastomeric seals
- Mechanical seals
- Foam seals
- Mortar-based seals
- Silicone-based seals
- Composite sheet seals
- Putty-based seals
- Procedure writing and editing skills
Job Details
- Job Location: Eunice, NM (on-site)
- This job operates in a professional office environment. It routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, etc.
- Work Schedule: 9/80 work week (80 hours over 9 days in a two-week period). Some nights and weekend work may be required. Employees are also subject to call-outs as needed.
- Travel Required: Yes; 10% of the time
- CAA Access; L or Q level security clearance
- Emergency Response Organization (ERO) duty is required, including being on-call (24/7) during your designated team duty week.
- Industrial, radiological, and construction environment. UUSA operates and constructs an enrichment facility. Multiple construction activities are taking place on the site. Heavy machinery, personal protective equipment, and other safety requirements are present.
Primary Functions
- Maintain and update the Site Fire Hazard Analysis (FHA) and Site Combustible Loading Calculation
- Develop and manage fire protection systems, including suppression and detection systems
- Evaluate and issue permits for impaired fire suppression and detection systems
- Assess and implement compensatory measures for fire system impairments
- Develop and issue permits for temporary introduction of flammable and combustible materials
- Participate in Integrated Safety Analysis Teams for Design Safety Basis Development, HAZOP, and Safety Analysis
- Perform IROFS-related structural surveillance and inspections
- Conduct 70.72 evaluations as a Change Authority
- Manage the site's flammable and combustible materials control program
- Coordinate with training organization to develop and implement fire protection training
- Function as the facility's Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) for fire protection matters
- Review and approve fire protection-related work orders and maintenance activities
- Assist with NRC event reporting relating to fire protection
- Ensure timely completion of all fire protection surveillance, inspection, test, and maintenance activities
